Where can I sell my furniture??!?

I make custom furniture and made a set of nesting tables out of Purpleheart and Cedar. The lady I made them for has bailed for some unknown reason, so now I need to sell them. I live in Tucson, AZ-Where can I sell them???

Contact some interior designers in your area, check out booth space at craft shows (harvest festival is starting soon), art shows, or check out your local galleries or see whether someone will take them on consignment. It sounds like you are an artist and that these pieces would sell nicely to the right customer.

I recently got this from a family member who passed away. I would like to know more information about it, such as what year it was made and how much it could be worth. I’ve already tried contacting Lane furniture but haven’t heard back from them yet.

What value does a cedar tree have ? please read:?

I have a 35 ft tall cedar tree I need cut down in my back yard. I have no money so want to offer it for free. One guy came to look today and was going to cut and take off for free because he makes cedar furniture, but he said the tree wasn’t growing straight enough. I’ve heard Cedar wood isn’t good for wood stoves ( we use them a lot around here) and so what else would someone want this cedar tree for that would make them come and cut it down and take it away for free because it is valuable to them. ?

Cedar makes great mulch. You have to cut the wood down enough to be able to put it in a mulcher, but when you are done the mulch is outstanding. Their has to be somebody that will take it. You can burn cedar but I don’t know the effect it will have on the chimney as far as soot. I know it does not heat as well as oak or hickory but smells good burning. People also use cedar for siding and shingles and even cook trout on cedar slabs. Their are many uses for cedar.

What type of wood for outdoor furniture?

I want to build a simple outdoor picnic table and use pine (mostly 2×4) for construction because it is inexpensive. I plan to set it on my backyard lawn, so it will be exposed to moisture and sunlight. Question is, if I stain & protect it, will it last just as long as other higher quality woods like redwood and cedar? Thanks.

The pine, properly stained, sealed, and protected, should last a good long while. Especially important is to guard the footings of the table and/or benches; wherever it comes in contact with the ground, lingering moisture will tend to invade the wood. Likewise, give the table a very slight slant and enough gaps to drain quickly and easily, to avoid any standing water.
However, with equal treatments on various types of wood, pine is still not the equal of redwood or cedar. Cedar, for example, possesses a natural chemical resistance to insects and rot that makes it last considerably longer.
Given how expensive the higher-quality woods are, it might be worthwhile to make a pine table and replace it after a few years, once it starts to decay.

Is there some type of clear stain, or sealer, or something that I can apply to the wood to preserve it’s natural red color?

The wood is mostly going to be indoors, (molding, trim, some furniture). However, if you can suggest something to preserve the wood for either indoors or outdoors, that would be great!

And, if there is something, is it possible to purchase it at Lowe’s/Home Depot type of stores? Thanks!

With the applications you mentioned, I guess this is red cedar, not aromatic cedar. You can try something that blocks UV, but I’m not sure if it would help. I’ve been wanting to find a way to preserve that almost burnt orange color of paduak ("pa-DUKE") for years (Hook ‘em Horns), but it’s any light that changes the color dark brown, not just UV light.

It sounds like red cedar is different though, and using a UV inhibitor will help. See:

I recently acquired a hope chest, designed by Lane. It is cedar. The inside is in excellent condition with two Lane markings, a moth guarantee, and the bottom has numbers embrossed into the wood. I am refinishing it for my daughter’s birthday, and I thought it might be interesting to present her with the history of the chest. If anyone has any information of where I can go to acquire this or might know something, I would appreciate their input. Thanks!

you can compare with the museum, and see the age of museum piece . I mean the surface of wood.

How To Preserve Your Fine Clothing With A Cedar ChestA cedar chest may help to keep your fine clothing in top condition. Red cedar has been employed in the construction of chests and closets for a really long time, and there has always been an idea that the odour really helped keep attire safe from moths and other pests. Recently, scientists have carried out more tests into cedar and its capability to see off pests, and it’s been proved the wood does have this capability. Tests continue to be carried out to estimate its effect on other pests like cockroaches and termites. It was even a convention in times gone by for married men and women to be given a cedar chest as a marriage present. This shows the real belief which folk held in those days, regarding the efficiency of the material in protecting valuable clothing.

This belief has been cleared.

Over time, the significance of cedar has appeared to decline. Part of this is little doubt because of the manmade fibers now being employed in clothing, which don’t have moth attacks in a fairly similar way, and some of it is thanks to the throwaway society where garments are modified much more frequently. Now, we are starting to realize the seriousness of cedar again, and it’s not before time. If you’re someone that appreciates fine clothing, you’ll be desiring to buy the pure, natural products which are far more susceptible to attack from clothing moths. The optimum answer is to form a closet from red cedar, there is, however, heavy cost concerned in this. This cost can be reduced significantly by utilizing either plywood or wafer board panels, but you still need to construct the cedar lining. Dependent on your situation and the quantity of clothing you are probably going to possess, you may just be able to manage very well with simply a cedar chest. It’ll take less upkeep, and if it is kept dry and clean, it should last for a great many years. There are far more folk living alone in the modern age, and regularly their clothes storage wishes don’t demand a full-size closet. A cedar chest can be purchased as a ready to go unit, and transported untouched, or it can be made from materials once it is within your house. You should not need any great practical abilities to try this, and the instructions should make it a straightforward process. If you do take this option, just make sure that you are getting a chest made of genuine red cedar, and not an inexpensive substitute.

Even other cedars, which don’t have the same smell, will not keep your clothing safe. You want an authentic savoury red cedar chest.

How to get candle wax off furniture?

One of my candles "malfunctioned" and dripped all over my cedar chest. Im not sure how to get the wax off the wood without damaging the finish. It’s a very old cedar chest and has never been re-finished. HELP!
Thanks so much to everybody!! These are all great answers. Im thinking a combination of these techniques will work just great !!!!!!

First use some ice to get the wax as cold as possible.
Work in small areas. Do not rush.
Using a razor edge (like comes in a box cutter or paint scraper), lay the razor flat against surface and gently get under and lift off the frozen wax.
SAFETY NOTE: If you use a box cutter blade, you should make sure to wear leather gloves and work away from any part of your body. You may also try to embed the blade in to a potato.

One other thing: If the grain of the wood was open or unfinished, there may be a lingering stain from the wax that has deeply embedded inside the wood.
I am not currently aware of any solvents that will get rid of that stain without damaging the wood.

Be safe and good luck.

UPDATE: Maybe after you’ve scraped off as much wax as you can, use the brown paper and hot iron trick above.

I prefer the furniture to be in lighter color wood (natural or cedar). The armoire must include a hanging rack. I have been searching for weeks but it is so hard to find a set because there are limited armoires. It would be great to hear from somone who actually used the brand of furniture. We will be using it for our firstborn! Thanks so much.
I realize it will probably have to be shipped. That’s fine!

I got our crib and dresser from Baby Depot, It is really nice and we love them!

How can I fix splintered tops on wooden furniture?

I have two pieces of furniture, a cedar chest and a wooden cabinet, that were scuffed up on the tops and have all kinds of nicks and splinters. The wooden cabinet had falled out of a truck bed onto the road, the cedar chest was purchased this way. What is the best solution to fix these two items?

From your description, a wood putty would fit your needs. Apply with a spatula, let it set, and then sand it down so it is flush with the rest of the furniture. The hard part is matching the stain. Otherwise, you may have to either strip it down with a paint or stain stripper, sand it all down, and restain it. You may opt to repaint it for an easier fix. If you choose the latter, make sure you do all the prep work properly (1.sanding to get a good tooth/grip for it to hold the paint 2.a good primer 3.paint)
