I thought the oil would smell like cedar shavings or the inside of a cedar chest, but in fact at first it smelled almost smokey. I applied it anyway, and after a day on the wood in my old cedar closet the scent changed to what I had expected. I am pleased with it.

I was looking for cedar oil to renew the cedar in my walk-in close(lost some nice wool suits to moths). The product works great for this application. I had to apply it in small sections because the fumes can be overwhelming in a confined room. Not only does it work in restoring the cedar to its original smell, it also enhances the wood and makes it look new too. Great Stuff!

I agree with Helen above, the little shelf either rides in the lid or slides in on a little rim at the top of the chest. As for storage, everyone above is correct except I would wrap items in acid free tissue, I always include a little packett of dessicant to absorb moisture and humidity and I do keep letters and paper goods in acid free tissue, not plastic. What a wonderful memory of your granny for you to treasure!

I have my grandmom’s cedar chest–it is th BEST for woolens! And you can store anything else in there, in fact, it’s a good idea to put your valuables in there for storage. I have two chests, both of which have shelves that go across the lid and are then folded out when the lid is opened. Does it attach across the lid? Maybe you need to just buy those hinges, like on toychests, at the hardware store if they’re missing?

The cedar wood shouldn’t hurt the fabrics…people use cedar to keep moths away from fabrics. That’s what it’s for. But it might not be a bad idea to call your local antique store just to make sure.
As far as letters and photos, I’d probably seal them in plastic or something before I put them in there, if for no other reason than to keep them from rubbing against each other and breaking them up.
I bet your cedar chest is really nice..that waterfall pattern was pretty.

I am very familiar with the chest, my mother-in-law had one as well. Our daughter has it now. After 60 plus years, it’s doubtful that the cedar would have much effect on anything and should be safe. As far as the shelf, I have no idea…is it more like a box that could just sit inside the chest?

These cedar hang-ups are just as promised. Smell good and well-made. Over the years, cedar hang-ups have saved my clothes from moths. I sand them to re-liven the cedar smell about every 6 months (when I remember!).

Hung these about two months ago when I discovered little moths in my closet. I haven't seen one there since, nor have I lost any more sweaters :). I've heard that you need to rub them with sand paper ever six months or so to let out more of the cedar oil. They work great.
